Ultimately, I believe, players and fans will just have to accept that playing football more than just casually is inherently very dangerous — way more dangerous than previously believed — and decide whether or not they want to participate. Yes, that includes fans who shell out big money on tickets, merch, and TV packages to support the game.

Technology (i.e., more sophisticated helmets, etc.) will help, but just as bullet-proof vests can help protect police officers, there will never be a perfect solution. Multi-million-dollar contracts are appealing (I assume — I’ve never been offered one), but players will have to decide for themselves if the risk is worth it.
